Buffalo

Lizzie says I have to write this down.

Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo. That was a legitimate, gramatically correct, complete sentence.

"Buffalo" is a word that's unique in the English language because without any conjugation, it can serve as both a noun, verb, or adjective. It can mean American Bison, or being-from-the-city-of-Buffalo-New-York, or to intimidate.
So, "Buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo" means: "American Bison from the city of Buffalo, New York intimidate other American Bison from the city of Buffalo, New York."

According to this, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo
You can stretch it out to eight repatitions and still have a legit sentence. But I've read the explination and it doesn't make sense to me. I see what they're going for, but I don't see how it's possible without at least a little conjugation.

What's really cool is this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion-Eating_Poet_in_the_Stone_Den
About a Chinese poem written with 96 differnt characters, all pronounced almost exactly the same.

Buffalo.

Inspirational Story

So here's a little story that I know I heard somewhere. It plays like on of those sappy ones you get from the relative who fowards every single email. I have no idea where I first heard it because it's been years and years. But it popped out the other night and Lizzie says I should write it down.

Once upon a time, there was a king with three sons. He wanted to teach them a valuable lesson, so he brought them to one of the great storerooms in his castle. It had been emptied out for the occasion.
"My boys," he said, "you all have much to learn about what it means to be a ruler, so I've brought you here to test you. I shall give you each ten gold coins, and whichever of you can fill this storeroom with whatever you buy with that money, shall inherit my throne."
So he gave them each ten coins and sent them on their way. The first brother was a very straightfoward young man, so he went looking for the cheapest, most space-filling material he could. He settled on goose-feather pillows. He bought three wagonloads of the cheapest, fluffiest pillows he could find, and had them brought to the storeroom. But when they were unloaded, they only filled the room about halfway to the ceiling.
The second brother was rather crafty and thought more cleverly about his plan. He hired an architect to redirect the castle's aquaduct, and to install a pipe in the ceiling of the room, so it wouold fill up with water. But he forgot to seal the door, and all the water spilled out and ran down the halls of the castle, leaving only a few puddles.
The third son was very disheartened by his brother's failures, and had no idea how to meet his father's challenge. He walked through the city streets, trying to imagine a way to fill the room on only ten gold coins. As he walked he passed a group of children. They were hungry and begging for money to buy food. He decided that he was going to fail anyway, so he might as well put his money to good use. He gave them each a gold coin, leaving him with only five. This made him feel a little better about his own plight, so he decided to go into the church, where he put 4 more of his remaining coins into the collection box. He went on down the street and saw an old woman selling homemade candles. He decided to buy one, and gave her his last coin. She looked at it and said, "Goodness sire, I don't have change for this!"
"Keep it," he said. "It'll do you more good than me." So he went back to the castle. He reported to the storeroom that evening and told his father. "I'm sorry father, but I gave away the coins, and have nothing to show for it but this candle."
His father the king produced a match and lit the little candle, and the light filled the entire room from ceiling to floor. "My son," he said, "I think you've learned a valuable lesson."

The End.

I didn't write this, I only added some details for flavor. I have no idea where it originally came from, but if anybody know's I'd love to hear it.

I'm on my 2 week AT. This is the first time away from my wife and son. I thought I'd be able to handle it, but I went and did something stupid. I looked up a bunch of Stan Rogers songs on Youtube. And I found this one. It's not him performing i, but he wrote it.

<lj-embed id="1" />

I miss you so much baby.

I'm a dad

Another miracle- I'm actuallu updating :)
So we have a son. A healthy, beautiful baby boy. Liz will update her journal at some point (she's eally tired)
I'm using hte hospital internet to do this. He's been in the world for two days now, he came in at 9 pounds, six ounces OMG. 22 inches long. Full head of hair, two eyes, to ears, ten fingers, ten toes. And oh god, such a beautiful little angel.

I really don't know how much more I'll be updating this. sharing my life with the internet isn't my thing, i guess. In Iraq it was therapeutic and convenient, but now there's easier ways to tell the people I love what's going on. So don't hold your breath out there.

Anyway, I just wanted to let those know who are watching and wondering why Liz isn't updating. Check out her journals, which should be in my friend's list, for more.

And give thanks.

Stuff

So of course you've all seen lizzie's grand announcement: we're pregnant :) i'm feeling pretty confident about it all, but i'm kinda apprehensive too. less than the lead-up to iraq, though.

right now i'm in wisconsin doing my two weeks. it's a BS job but eh, you gotta do it once a year.
the big thing on my mind right now is the 4 boy scouts killed in the tornado. it wasn't very far from here, i guess (compared to how far it is from DE) i really feel sad about that.

i've also got a story idea brewing in my head. it's based on this bible story that i only vaguely remember. something about a statue made of all these valuable metals, but its feet were made of clay. i remember all these old testmanet stories from this children's picture bible we had as a kid.

if anyone knows what story i'm talkign about, can you give me a book and chapter? thanks.

plus i've been trying to remember stan rogers lyrics. i'm gonna start listening to him again. lizzie baby, mind looking him up on your ipod thing? thanks.

3 months of silence and I post a freling Lolcat. sorry guys, i just don't much i feel like sharing. Lizzie shares a lot, but I'm a bit more private, i guess.
I do have a blog for WoW though. you can read it here:

http://www.guildportal.com/Blog.aspx?Blog=634710

it's really only legible or relevant if you play WoW.
you have to be logged into guild portal though. and you might to be in my guild. i'm not sure. if so, let me know, i'll take down the link.

I made a bunch more Lolcats, but none of them went up on the voting page! i even registered, but they never sent me a confirmation email. i guess their servers are overwhelmed.

Reading List

So if you know me, you might know I'm a very frugal person. That is, I don't liek to spend money if I don't have to. Now that my sweetie has a new job at a library, I can get books for free. People gave me Borders Gift Cards for Christmas, and I'll be using them, but I also plan to read some stuff that I don't want to pay for. So I'm starting a list here of books I want Lizzie to watch for in the library, so I can give them a shot. These are books i'm willing to try, but not willing to purchase outright.

The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman
Redwall by Brian Jacques
The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

i'll be ameding this list as time goes by. And feel free to make suggestions.

I did the polar bear thing!

Need less to say, it was cold. It was just me and two little old ladies. One didn't even go under, but the other did 8 dunks, compared to my one. But hey, i did it. Karl took some great pictures. Lizzie wanted to come, but we got a freakin crack in the windshield, and I had to call Karl to come pick me up.
Anyway, Lizzie will put the pictures up on her journal. Quite an experience.

Thankful

I'm so thankful to be home. It's a really great feeling to be home. That's top of the list.
I'm thankful for a loving and wonderful wife that i can laugh with and who understands me. She's the best thing that ever happened to me.
I'm thankful for a family that loves me and is always there when I need them.
I'm thankful for SO much right now, it's hard to even go further into depth. I'd end up saying I'm thankful for Dr. Pepper. So those are the top three.

Polar Bear!

so, i was reading this magazine yesterday, and they're doing polar bear swims on the Brandywine this year! I'm so gonna do this. of course, lizzie is VERY against this plan. She's froma tropical island, and the only function that cold water serves in her life is to become ice. Cold water is merely water that's on it's way to being ice in her drinks.

It's the first sunday in december.

so what's got me upset?

so i've had a character on world of warcraft for over a year now. his name is Chingachguk, after the character from Last of the Mohicans. well i just got notified by Blizzard that the name is appropriate, and i have to change it. i'm actually real upset by this, and i almost don't know why. is it because geting back on chingachguk was one of the things i was looking forward to all year? i don't know.
anyway, it's got me all a-flutter. i'm going back to work on tuesday, but this is what's got me upset. wierd.

follow-up:

so i gave in, and re-named the character Chickamauga, after a river.

she says i have to do this

so i guess i'm a reckless dirver. first of all, the passenger seat belt in the car doesn't work quite right, so lizzie is never actually buckled up. gotta get that fixed.

we're going to mcdonalds. we're on kirkwood, going to the one on newport gap pike, and coming from the east. i get into the turn lane to go into that furniture store or whatever it is, next to the mcdonalds. if you've ever beent here, you know what i'm talking about. so lizzie starts freaking out, but i make the turn safely. i wait for traffic to clear, and make the turn. no problem. but an argument ensues, and i try to resolve it by asking the guy in the drive-through window for his opinion. and he takes lizzie's side! apparently, somebody got t-boned and totalled doing exactly what i'd done.

so now i have to writ ethis.
i had a salad. she had a burger and fries. who's REALLY being unsafe, huh?

no reall,y i know traffic safety is real important. i think i'm a safe driver, but i guess you never know until someone tells you.

So I haven't posted in almost a month! why do you ask?

because I'm home, enjoying my sweetie's comforts, seeing friends and family, and having a great time! i'm done iwth this whole stupid nonsense. i'm so glad it's over. I'm not gonna comment about the welcome home ceremony, and hopefully i won't comment about anything military-related ever again.

I've seen all my friends in person already, and thanked them, directly for all the good wishes and things. but if actually do have some real internet fans, which i doubt, thanks to you too for any good thoughts you were sending my way.

I don't plan to post here very often anymore, but who knows?
